The European Union’s EUROCLIMA programme held its annual meeting in Panama City from 24 to 26 March 2026, providing a key forum for strengthening cooperation between Latin America, the Caribbean and the European Union on climate action and sustainable development.
The event, co-organised by the European Union and the Government of Panama, brought together representatives from partner countries, European institutions and implementing agencies of the EUROCLIMA programme—including FIAP—with the aim of strengthening coordination and advancing the implementation of initiatives aligned with the European Union’s Global Gateway strategy.
Under the theme “Building on the NDCs towards the implementation of the Global Gateway”, the meeting served as a platform for sharing progress, identifying challenges and consolidating a common regional vision for the green transition.
During the conference, work was carried out on aligning with the EU–LAC investment agenda, strengthening coordination between programme initiatives, and defining strategic priorities for the 2026–2027 period, amongst other topics.
Furthermore, the exchange of knowledge and experiences between countries was promoted, with the aim of improving the implementation of public policies tailored to regional needs.
The meeting was structured around two main thematic areas:
Circular economy, with an emphasis on:
-Waste and wastewater management
-Resource efficiency
-Sustainable business models
Energy transition, focusing on:
-Renewable energy
-Regional energy integration
-Energy security
In addition, the role of sustainable finance as a driver for scaling up investment and ensuring the impact of initiatives was addressed across all themes.
Key outcomes of the meeting included a consolidated regional perspective on progress, challenges and opportunities in the field of climate action, a better understanding of partner countries’ needs, and the identification of opportunities for cooperation and synergies between stakeholders.
The meeting concluded with a meeting of the programme’s Steering Committee, during which lessons learnt were shared and the joint commitment to moving towards a green, fair and inclusive transition was reaffirmed.
