Authorities in the country have debated the challenges of violence against women in the political and digital spheres.
Within the framework of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, the Ministry of Women of Paraguay has carried out the National Forum “Women without barriers: participation free of political and digital violence”, held as part of the Programme to Improve the Prevention of and Care for Violence against Women in Paraguay. The Programme is co-financed by the European Union and the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID), and is implemented jointly by FIAP. During the day, the role of the Ministry as the governing body in the design and implementation of public policies for the prevention of and care for violence against women was highlighted.
The authorities present agreed on the need to join State efforts to combat violence against women. Taking part in the opening were: the President of the Republic, Santiago Peña; the EU Ambassador in Paraguay, Katja Afheldt; representatives of Spanish Cooperation; the Gender, Inclusion and Diversity Manager of the Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean (CAF), Ana Baiardi; and the Minister of Women, Alicia Pomata.
The forum included dialogue and analysis panels on political violence against women and violence in digital environments. The first panel, moderated by Minister Alicia Pomata, brought together representatives of the justice system, political representation and public defence, who analysed the manifestations of political violence in Paraguay, the challenges of the current electoral context and the urgent measures needed to ensure the full, safe and violence-free participation of women at all levels of public life.
The second panel addressed the various forms of digital violence faced by women and included the participation of public institutions, specialized prosecutors’ offices, civil society organizations and media outlets. Measures were sought to prevent this form of violence and to promote safe and inclusive digital environments.
During the event, the Ministry of Women reaffirmed its commitment to combating violence against women and called for strengthened coordination among State institutions for the effective implementation of Law 5777/2016 on Comprehensive Protection of Women against all forms of violence.
