With the support of the European Union, Peru and Ecuador have launched a police and migration cooperation centre in Tumbes with the aim of strengthening regional security in both countries.
The creation of the Centre for Police and Migration Cooperation (CCPM) has been a decisive step towards strengthening regional security in Peru and Ecuador, a joint initiative that will be launched at the Binational Border Assistance Centre (CEBAF) in Tumbes. This initiative is part of the project to combat illicit drug trafficking and organised crime in Peru and is being promoted jointly with the EUROFRONT programme.
The new CCPM will be a strategic point for the exchange of police and immigration information and intelligence, facilitating a rapid, coordinated and effective response to transnational organised crime affecting both countries, especially in the border area. It will function as an inter-institutional coordination mechanism, involving both law enforcement and immigration authorities in Peru and Ecuador.
Tumbes hosted the meeting, which was attended by delegations from both countries, representatives of the European Union, and international specialists. Activities included binational technical roundtables, presentations of European and Latin American models of border cooperation, and the joint development of operational proposals for the implementation of the CCPM.
The main objective of this meeting was to strengthen the scope of action of the CEBAF in Tumbes so that it can evolve towards a model similar to that of the European Union’s Police and Customs Cooperation Centres (PCCC). This transformation will enable real-time data exchange, joint operation planning, and technological integration for more efficient border surveillance.
In their statements, the authorities emphasised the firm commitment of both nations and the European Union to the fight against transnational organised crime, recognising that only through effective, coordinated and sustained cooperation will it be possible to dismantle criminal networks and protect citizens.
With this implementation, Peru and Ecuador reaffirm their political will to act together in the face of common threats, transforming international cooperation into a real and operational tool to guarantee the security and well-being of their populations.
