In Senegal, illegal mining is a serious environmental crime with negative impacts on natural resources and human health. This activity, which is carried out without the necessary permits, often involves the exploitation of minerals such as gold and sand, causing deforestation, water and soil pollution, and affecting local communities.
Through the GARSI project, intensive training has been carried out in Saraya, in southeastern Senegal. The main objective of this training has been to provide Senegalese National Gendarmerie personnel with theoretical and practical tools to address challenges related to environmental crimes, illegal mining, and the safe management of hazardous chemicals in the country.
The activity was organized into two shifts, with the participation of 50 personnel, including 22 trainers, who will in turn act as multipliers of the knowledge they have acquired. The sessions were held at the facilities of what will be the future GARSI base in Saraya.
The sessions combined theory and case studies, promoting a practical approach applicable to the realities on the ground. In addition, topics such as national and international environmental regulations; the impacts of illegal gold mining on biodiversity, public health, and natural resources; waste and hazardous product management; safety protocols for handling toxic substances; and species protection and the fight against deforestation were addressed.
This training initiative will strengthen the operational and preventive capabilities of GARSI units in addressing environmental challenges arising from the use of chemicals for illegal gold mining.
In addition, these training courses have enabled participants to become aware of the risks associated with illegal mining and exposure to hazardous products, ensuring both the safety of personnel and the effective preservation of evidence for the prosecution of environmental crimes.
This training thus reinforces FIAP’s commitment to safety, environmental governance, and international cooperation in the Sahel.
