Specialists from Peru are working with their European counterparts to strengthen their efforts in areas such as cybercrime, cryptocurrencies and money laundering, among others.
With the aim of tackling the new challenges posed by organised crime and digital criminal economies, the Peruvian judiciary, in coordination with the European Union (EU), has held an international seminar entitled “Asset Forfeiture in the Digital Context: Cybercrime, Cryptocurrencies, Money Laundering and Accounting Expertise,” aimed at judges, prosecutors, accounting experts and operators of the specialised criminal justice system.
The event is part of the actions promoted by the European project on the fight against illicit drug trafficking and organised crime in Peru and addressed topics such as: the traceability of cryptocurrencies in asset investigations; the criminal use of virtual assets; accounting expertise in cases of money laundering and corruption; and international cooperation for asset recovery, among others.
This seminar aims to improve coordination between the judiciary, the Public Prosecutor’s Office, the National Police, the Financial Intelligence Unit (UIF) and the Comptroller General of the Republic. The EU reaffirms its commitment to the fight against impunity, institutional strengthening and the recovery of illicit assets. ‘We are committed to a more effective, transparent and coordinated justice system,’ said Eva Platero Aranda, head of the European project and FIAP expert in Peru.
Among the speakers were international specialists such as Mr Faustino Gudín Rodríguez-Magariños and Mr José Joaquín Taús Ballester (Spain), as well as renowned Peruvian magistrates such as Mr César San Martín Castro and Mr Manuel Luján Túpez. The experts shared experiences from Europe and Latin America in the fight against transnational crime.
This initiative not only promotes the exchange of experiences between Europe and Latin America, but also strengthens the technical and legal capacities of the Peruvian State to tackle new forms of economic and digital crime, ensuring that illicit assets are returned to the State and public interests are protected.
