With the support of the European Union and through cooperation, Peru is continuing its fight against organised crime in the region.
Lima hosted the closing ceremony of the European Union’s project on combating drugs and organised crime, which since 2009 has helped to strengthen national capacities to tackle these illicit activities.
The event was attended by officials and representatives from institutions involved in the investigation and prosecution of crime, as well as members of the diplomatic corps, including the ambassadors of France, Germany, Romania and the Netherlands.
During the event, the main results of the project were presented, including the capacity-building of more than 2,000 police officers specialising in criminal investigation, the training of judges, prosecutors and police officers, the development of tools for criminal investigation, and the strengthening of coordination and interoperability between institutions within the criminal justice system. In addition, the work carried out to strengthen the Specialised Multidisciplinary Teams (EMEs), which focus on complex investigations into organised crime, was highlighted.
However, although this highly successful project is now coming to an end, the work continues, and the event provided an opportunity to launch ACTION Peru – a new phase of cooperation that will build on the efforts made so far and strengthen national capacities to tackle organised crime, with new areas of work focusing on the coordination of the criminal justice system, the fight against illicit maritime drug trafficking, and the strengthening of the regulatory framework.
Through this transition process, the European Union and Peru are maintaining and strengthening their cooperation, incorporating new capabilities and an operational perspective to respond in a coordinated manner to the new dynamics of organised crime.
