The One Voice platform has been launched in Nigeria to promote electoral integrity and the peaceful participation of women.
Lagos, a city in Nigeria, hosted a workshop at which the One Voice platform was launched; this platform aims to promote electoral integrity and the peaceful participation of women in political life through electoral literacy.
The workshop, organised by the European Union’s Peace, Security and Governance (EPSG) project, brought together participants from twelve Nigerian states who addressed the information gaps that leave women and young girls vulnerable to political manipulation and electoral violence.
The workshop’s objectives include combating disinformation by countering the rapid spread of false information in areas of high electoral tension, as well as exploring strategies to resist manipulation, empowering women to lead peace-building efforts.
The three fundamental pillars of the workshop have been knowledge (deepening understanding of electoral rights and processes), integrity (upholding the rule of law and non-violence) and leadership (empowering women and young women as community leaders).
During the workshop in Lagos, a list of key resolutions was drawn up, agreed upon collectively by the participants; and to put these resolutions into practice, the participants agreed on several strategic actions, including the establishment of a unified advocacy platform under the name ‘One Voice Nigeria’. A national steering committee has been set up, with representation from all geopolitical zones, comprising eleven women with an outstanding track record in the struggle for women’s rights and participation in political and public life.
The “One Voice” platform will be extended at regional level to the other two countries where the EPSG project is being implemented, Benin and The Gambia, strengthening the network and the implementation of concrete actions in support of women and democracy.
Participants emphasised the need to go beyond dialogue and ensure the effective implementation of the agreed actions. They have committed to returning to their communities to mobilise grassroots support, educate citizens about their electoral rights, identify and support women leaders, and engage stakeholders at all levels.
