Implementation and strengthening of socio-environmental traceability systems to support sustainable agricultural, forestry and agro-industrial exports

Paraguay

Paraguay has an open and stable economy, underpinned by abundant natural resources and key productive sectors such as agri-food, forestry and livestock. This productive structure is a key pillar of its economic growth and its integration into international trade, particularly through exports of agricultural and agro-industrial products. However, this model also faces significant challenges. High dependence on the primary sector exposes the country to the volatility of international prices and the effects of climate change. The loss of forest cover also remains one of the main environmental challenges for sustainable land management.

In an international context marked by new environmental, social and trade requirements, socio-environmental traceability has become a key tool for improving environmental governance, facilitating access to demanding markets and an opportunity to position Paraguay as a strategic player in the international trade of sustainable products, in line with the principles of green growth and the circular economy.

This project builds on the work initiated by AL-INVEST Verde in Paraguay and aims to strengthen socio-environmental traceability systems in strategic value chains, such as meat and leather, soya, forest products and other agro-industrial sectors. The initiative will support the consolidation of national traceability systems, the integration of public systems with private schemes, the strengthening of institutional capacities, and the promotion of sustainable Paraguayan products in international markets. It will also contribute to improving coordination between public institutions, the private sector and producers.
