Nigeria is Africa's leading economy and the continent's most populous country: it has one of the fastest growing populations in the world. Difficulties in meeting the needs of Nigeria's diverse population, such as lack of opportunities for advancement, natural calamities or political factors, further compound the social and economic vulnerabilities that act as push factors for irregular migration. Nigeria is a country of origin, transit and destination of various migration configurations, both internal and external, including seasonal labor migration, undocumented or irregular migration, internal displacement, human trafficking, smuggling of migrants, female migration, but also skilled professional migration.
The EU has supported Nigeria to refocus on the National Migration Policy, which is the centerpiece of the National Migration Strategy. FIAP is currently developing the A-Tipsom project, which aims to reduce human trafficking and smuggling of migrants at national and regional levels, and between Nigeria and the EU, with an emphasis on women and children.
Action is integrated into national frameworks, including migration policy, Federal Government of Nigeria priorities and regional priorities, in particular the National Development Plan. Federal Government of Nigeria and regional priorities, and in particular the National Development Plan (2021-2025), as well as ECOWAS frameworks on free movement, migration and transnational crime.
