West Africa faces persistent challenges to peace and security, driven by political instability, governance issues, insurgencies, and violent extremism. Furthermore, the spread of violent extremism from the Sahel to coastal states poses a growing threat to security. Disinformation and organised crime further exacerbate these challenges, undermining democratic governance and stability.
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) plays a key role in coordinating regional responses to these security challenges. Despite its well-established peace and security frameworks, including the ECOWAS Conflict Prevention Framework, effective implementation remains a challenge, requiring better coordination, strengthened early warning and response mechanisms, and greater civil society involvement to effectively address these issues.
In this regard, FIAP participates in the EPSG by supporting civil society organisations dedicated to institutional strengthening, political rights and the consolidation of democratic structures, in order to effectively combat the vectors of disinformation in the development of electoral cycles.
